"If You dont look good, We dont look good."

-Vidal Sassoon -Hair God

There’s more than one way to style a wave, and there are a plethora of products out there to help keep those curls cascading. Below are tips and tricks to help you rock those ringlets yourself and make better decisions when shopping for Irons and Styling Products.

Hair Curling Hot Tools

Headbetter Hairstylists love Hot Tools Brand Irons, they are reasonably priced and reliable.

Curling Iron

If you’re looking to create a more polished look, the curling iron is the way to go. Since there is a clasp and a spring that keeps it all in place, the curls tend to turn out more uniformed. That's not to say an iron is just for prom curls... Headbetter recommends setting a nice group of curls with your iron, and then combing out your curls with a wide toothed comb for a more relaxed and lived in look. The stylists at Headbetter Salon love Hot Tools curling irons, you will find these in every professional salon in the world, and if your stylist is using it... why shouldn't you?

"When using a curling iron, take a reasonable section of hair... start near the roots, give it one or two revolutions around the iron, then loosen the iron and  walk it further down the hairshaft, then give it another couple revolutions and repeat... remember to keep the iron moving... holding it in one place too long is what causes 99% of the damage... so learn to constantly be rotating and releasing and moving your way down the shaft... keep that iron moving to end damaged tresses"

-Johnny Ciccone - Owner Headbetter Salon Sherman Oaks

Wands

Bellami 6 in 1 wand system

For a looser, more mermaid/beachy look, wands are the way to go! The curls tend to come out looser, and give you that straight-outta-the-ocean vibe. We think Wands are some of the quickest and easiest tools for our clients to use at home and we know that most of the time you aren't going to want to look like Curly Sue in your yoga garb... so a wand can give you that slight curl that just accentuates your true self and doesn't look like you are trying too hard. Headbetter recomends this versatile wand with interchangeable attachments from Bellami Hair.

Hot Rollers

Hot rollers tend to be a little kinder to hair than wands or curling irons since the plastic casing around the curler serves as a barrier between your hair and the hot metal. Hot rollers are great for busy mornings, because once you roll you hair up, your hands are free to do your make-up, brew some coffee, and get your day started. Just make sure your hair is 95% dry when you put them in and make sure they are mostly cooled off before you take them out.

Foam Rollers

This is perhaps the healthiest way to create a curl. With foam rollers, there is no heat involved. Foam rollers are most effective if used with slightly damp hair, and allowed to set overnight. When you take the curlers out the next morning – make sure your hair is completely dry first – you will be rewarded with a head of healthily curled hair!

Hair  Products For Curling Hair

Heat Protectant

Always, always, always spray your hair with heat protectant before exposing it to a curling iron or wand. A simple spritz helps protect your hair from heat damage. Most Heat protectants are designed to be put on towel dried hair before you blow dry it, and then the magic elixir is actually inside or on the hair when its dry... remember, its never a good idea to take a hot iron to damp hair, so first add your heat protectant, then blow dry your hair, and when its good and dry, you are ready to set your curls. Headbetter Salon recommends Heat protectant is one place you should never skimp, and Kevin Murphy Heated.Defense Kevin Murphy dubs itself as "skincare for the hair" we trust it and so should you.

Curl Cream

Curl cream is a godsend for those blessed with naturally curly hair! The product helps reduce frizz, and keeps natural curls together and shiny. Most of the time, you are going to be applying curl cream to towel dried hair, then combing it out and scrunching it with a towel while drying your hair, take care not to create frizz... slow and steady wins the race.

Sea Salt Spray

Sea Salt spray is the biggest craze in the hair industry for the last few years running, if you want that Lived in loose wave, Spray your towel dried hair with Sea Salt texture spray from Eleven Australia and scrunch your hair with your hands, and let it air dry for flexible tousled beachy look. or, better yet, use your hot iron Wand to create loose defined runway beach waves.

Hairspray

Now that you’ve made the curls, hairspray is essential for keeping them in place. Thankfully, gone are the days (mostly) of crunchy hairspray... this ain't Yo Mama's Aqua-Net. There are plenty of “flexible” hairsprays out there that keep your hair in place, but not stiff. Use Hairspray sparingly, try flipping your hear upside down and spraying a tiny bit and the scrunching it...
