Coronavirus: Hair Tips from Home

With the entire country on lockdown because of the coronavirus, Headbetter Salon in Los Angeles hopes everyone is staying happy and healthy during these uncertain times.

We know that times are tough right now, so we wanted to share a little hair-spiration on creative and fun ways to take care of your hair from the safety of your own home.

While our salon have closed for the time being, you can still trust us to be your go-to hair hairstylists (from a safe distance).

Below, we share our best Coronavirus hair tips when staying at home!

Touching-Up Your Roots

Without access to a salon, many are wondering how to maintain their hair color.  We just want to remind you that Headbetter Salon is here for you. If you cannot wait to have your hair colored in the salon, we recommend you reach out to your hairstylist at Headbetter Salon and see what we can cook up for you. We have hair color kits available to be picked up or shipped to our clients and we can perform Zoom or FaceTime "virtual hair appointments" to assist you with the application. Another fun thing to note, is that there are colored root sprays that you can order online! Checkout Amazon to find your color and spray on your roots when you need a quick fix for your grocery store visit!

Cutting your own hair

Leave those bangs alone! After careful consideration our recommendation is to wait it out and don't even attempt to cut your hair yourself. The risk versus the reward ratio is just too out-of-control for you to attempt to cut your hair yourself. Leave the tough stuff to the professionals. Search YouTube: “At Home Hair Cut Disasters" and you will think twice before picking up your kitchen shears.

Ease up on the Shampoo

Washing your hair daily can strip the natural oils from your hair, leaving your locks dry and brittle. A piece of advice most hairdressers will give is to wash your hair every other day. While this change in routine will be beneficial in the long-term, in the short-term, you can be left with an excess of oil while transitioning. Your hair will need time to adjust its level of oil production. Take this time now – while you’re home and figuring out Zoom – to cut back on your shampoo use. As your body gets used to this new hair care routine, you’ll be able to shampoo less and less. You can use dry shampoo or texturizing spray to help soak up any excess oils while you are training your hair to adjust to less time in the suds! Our favorites? Eleven’s “Give Me Clean Hair” Dry Shampoo or Kevin Murphy’s “Doo.Over”, Dry Powder Finishing Hairspray.

"Dry shampoo gives my hair an extra day(or two) of life, when I am trying to get the most out of each shampoo." - Ashlee Murray (@ashleemurrayhair - Headbetter Stylist)

Get Creative with Color

Always wanted to try something different? A spunky color? A streak of pink? Now could be the time to experiment, without the commitment! There are a few temporary, at-home color options, that will give you a fun pop of color. Overtone.co would be the first we’d suggest. This brand houses temporary color in a shampoo and conditioner. This gives you the ability to have fun, without permanently changing your hair color and causing damage. Celebluxury.com houses the brand “Viral” which is a temporary color shampoo and conditioner as well. We recommend both these options because they are temporary, and will wash out.

Use up Old Products

How many half-used bottles of leave-in conditioner or hairspray are sitting under your sink? How about that volumizing mousse you just had to have, but ditched after one use? Pull those out, and use them up! Not only might your hair benefit from a little extra moisturizing, but you might even rediscover a product that you love. (Extra bonus: you get to clean out your bathroom a bit!) Unsure of how to use a product? Send your stylist a message to see if they can help with product use.

Treat Your Hair to a Little TLC

Self-care is so important during this time, so be sure to treat yourself – and you hair – to a little tender loving care! A great way to do this is with an at-home hair mask. We recommend a few that you can order online or pick-up at Headbetter Salon.

We recommend Eleven Australia's “REPAIR MY HAIR NOURISHING CONDITIONER”.

A strengthening conditioner used to rebuild damaged hair and protect from heat styling.

Repair My Hair Nourishing Conditioner:

  • Protects from heat damage up to 220°C
  • Clinically proven to increase volume by up to 32%*
  • Helps repair and rebuild bond structure of the hair

Another luxurious recommendations is Kevin Murphy’s “Young.Again.Masque”.

A nurturing and restorative at-home treatment MASQUE from our REJUVENATE regimen. YOUNG.AGAIN.MASQUE delivers deep conditioning to the hair and scalp, leaving hair full of youthful body and bounce. Its restorative blend of Amino Acids, essential oils and rich-moisturisers’ help to restore and renew lustre and shine to dry, damaged, and brittle hair.

  • Antioxidant-rich blend helps to restore and replenish the hair
  • Deep conditioning treatment imparts moisture, and helps soften the hair
  • Known rejuvenating ingredients help restore a more youthful look
  • Provides shine and lustre to the hair
  • Ideal for dry, damaged and brittle hair
  • Sulphate, paraben and cruelty-free

We hope this provides you with enough information to keep things fresh during such a funky time. We want to make sure we are clear that no client should ever use any lightener/bleach at home and if possible, we recommend staying away from any chemical that can alter your hair, whatsoever. As we mentioned, just YouTube some "At Home Hair Disaster" videos and you will thank the Hair Gods you left your hair to the professionals!

We dream of seeing you soon, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your stylist at Headbetter Salon if you have any questions about your hair situation! We are in this together.
